Chapter 10

“You have to go to the doctor,” Nancy said, her lips compressing as she watched her best friend turn white again.

“These are only Braxton-Hicks contractions,” Mia replied as the pain slowly ebbed away again. She took a long breath and rubbed her swollen belly. “This little person isn’t due for another three weeks,” she explained as she sank onto her beaten up sofa that hadn’t been comfortable for about twenty years. It was old, it was ratty but the soft blanket she’d thrown over the cushions helped. Soon she’d get a new sofa. And new furniture, she promised herself. Just as soon as this little baby was born and she could think about something other than her imminent motherhood and…

No, no, no, no, no! She was not going to think about that man ever again! For weeks after he’d found her in Jisba’s arms, he’d ignored her, thinking she’d betrayed him. When she’d left the palace, she hadn’t meant for it to be permanent. She hadn’t meant for it to be even temporary. She’d thought to just give him some time to think, to realize how ridiculous his accusations were. As if she’d ever let another man touch her the way Ramzi touched her! Good grief, when that man touched her body, it was as if he was touching her heart! The idea of another man touching her in any way made her cringe with disgust!

So she’d left! She’d come home, stayed with a friend for a week, expecting Ramzi to show up and demand that she come back to him. At least that would be talking, she’d thought at the time. Then maybe he would listen to her explanation, realize how ridiculous his accusations were.

But he hadn’t come for her. For a month after she’d gotten this horrible apartment and sent him her new address, she’d waited. Then those horrible papers had arrived but she still hadn’t believed he’d given up on their marriage, on what they shared. She loved him so much!

When she’d realized that she was pregnant, it had been the happiest and saddest moment of her life! She’d wanted so desperately to call up Ramzi and tell him the news, but she was hurt and angry. He should have been by her side when they’d discovered the news! They should have been holding hands and she would have stepped into his arms and been so thrilled!

Instead, she’d received confirmation of her pregnancy while sitting in a sterile room, alone and cold, feeling awkward in a paper gown, hurt and angry because Ramzi wasn’t by her side.

Thankfully, she’d had no morning sickness that she could remember, but she’d been so miserable without Ramzi that she hadn't been eating or sleeping well, so she’d been pretty numb.

Still, she’d had hope.

As another pain throbbed across her belly, radiating outward to the rest of her body, she gripped the sides of the sofa, thinking that her hope was gone. He wasn’t coming back to her. He’d believed that she’d go to another man, even when the sex between them was…well, it still made her blush.
